Mitchell Dijks is returning to Ajax’s selection for the return game against OGC Nice. Coach Marcel Keizer announced this on the eve of the match, at the press conference. “Mitchell played a match on Friday, and he’s fit. He’s definitely fit enough to substitute.”
24 year-old Dijks was loaned out to Norwich City in the second half of last season. He then returned to Amsterdam, where, at first glance, there is not much of a future for him. However, one week ago, Keizer said that the left-footed player still had some potential.
The North Holland native then played ninety minutes in the closed friendly game against Hull City (3-3) and could potentially play his first minutes this season in the Amsterdam ArenA. Dijks is the only new name in the selection compared to last week, Keizer said. The Ajax coach wouldn’t reveal anything about the starting line-up.
Leading up to the return game, Keizer stated that the chances are 50/50. After a 1-1 tie in France, this hasn’t changed.
Not a favourite
“Nice is France’s number 3 team, a hefty opponent”, said Keizer. “But we have a good team as well, one that reached the Europa League finals last year. Nine or ten of our guys played quite a lot then. We feel that we should win, but we’ll also add that it won’t be an easy task.”
Before and during the game, a moment will be taken to think of Abdelhak Nouri, the Ajacied who is suffering from serious brain damage. This will likely be very emotional for everyone with an Ajax heart. Keizer was asked how he had prepared his team for this this by the reporters.
“We’ve discussed what will be happening with the young guys. But it’s extremely hard to prepare for something like this. Tomorrow, when it’s time, we’ll see how everyone reacts.”
