Ajax will meet Rapid Wien in the UEFA Champions League third round qualifying match. Frank de Boer’s selection will report on either Tuesday, July 28, or Wednesday, July 29, in the Ernst Happelstadion in Vienna. De Boer is satisfied with the draw. “It could have been worse.”
It will be the first time that Ajax plays against the Austrian club. Ajax will first play in Vienna. One week later, the return match will be held in the Amsterdam ArenA.
“I was a bit nervous", says De Boer. “We were in the last phase of the draw. It was either going to be Fenerbahçe or Rapid Wien. I’m not complaining.”
Rapid Wien ended in second place last season, six points behind Salzburg. De Boer: “We need to wait and see what their level is. I haven’t watched any footage yet, but in theory we are the favourite.”
De Boer cherishes his memories of the Erns Happelstadion in Vienna, where he won the 1995 Champions League final with Ajax. “When I return there, I’m sure the memories will come rushing back. It was the greatest moment of my career.”
