Ajax and Leeroy Owusu have reached an agreement for the extension of his contract, which had been effective until June 30, 2016. The new, improved contract is effective per January 1, 2015, until June 30, 2019.
Owusu was born in Purmerend on August 13, 1996. The defender has been playing in Ajax’s youth academy since 2004. On August 11, 2014, he made his professional football debut for the Ajax Reserves in the Ajax – Telstar (3-0) Jupiler League match. To date, Owusu has played 12 official matches for the Ajax Reserves.
The young back signed his second contract with the club on Thursday. “Just like eighteen months ago with my first contract, I am proud and happy. The club has faith in me and is rewarding that now. I want to repay them for that.”
Director of football affairs Marc Overmars is happy with the extension of Owusu’s contract: “Leeroy has made a fantastic start with the Ajax Reserves and has taken big steps in his development. This is a reward for that. We’re extending his contract until 2019, which shows that we have faith in him.” Finally, Overmars sums up his young wing defender’s qualities: “He’s fast, strong and agile. That’s why it’s tough to play against him.”
