Ajax and Jasper Cillessen have reached an agreement to extend his contract that had been effective until June 30, 2016. The new, improved contract will be effective retroactively per November 1, 2014, and will be valid until June 30, 2018.
Cillessen was born on April 22, 1989, in Groesbeek. He made his debut in the first team on September 21, 2011, during the vv Noordwijk – Ajax (1-3) cup match. He has played 69 official matches to date in Ajax’s first team.
“Once again, this is a contract that exudes trust”, says Jasper Cillessen, shortly after signing his latest Ajax contract. “A contract extension with Ajax remains special, especially for a guy who came from the outside. I’m happy that, 3,5 years after my first contract, that I was able to renew it again. Eighteen months ago, everything was different. That shows how fast things can move. Definitely, a lot has happened in the past year.”
Director of football affairs Marc Overmars and general manager Michael Kinsbergen brought the contract negotiations with Cillessen to a good conclusion. On Tuesday, Frank de Boer was present in the ArenA to congratulate his keeper. “This sends a good signal”, said the Ajax coach of his first keeper’s contract extension. “Jasper, along with Davy Klaassen, Joël Veltman and Ricardo van Rhijn, among others, are the first Ajacieds to bind themselves to the club for a longer period of time. If the current group remains together for a minimum of two years, great things will happen. This extension is also a great signal towards Ajax and the supporters.”
De Boer is satisfied with Cillessen’s development in the past few seasons. “If Jasper continues to grow this way, he will remain a stable factor for Ajax and for the Dutch national team. He’s a real winner, with a fantastic mentality. Cillessen already is at a high level, but he can still improve in every area. It certainly doesn’t surprise me that he’s developed this way up until now.”
