On Friday afternoon, Geoffrey Castillion extended his contract until June 30, 2013. The tall forward has been plagued by injuries this past year. The new contract expresses confidence in the Amsterdam native.
In March, Geoffrey Castillion spoke to Ajax about making his debut in Ajax 1. “First, training with Ajax 1, then making the match selection, and then making my debut”, said the Ajax player. “The season still is in progress, so there’s a chance that I can have a great close to a difficult year.”
Castillion had good foresight, as he was selected by coach Frank de Boer three days later for the duel against ADO Den Haag. The tall forward made his accelerated dream debut in Ajax’s first team. Ajax lost 3-2 in The Hague, but Castillion made a good impression. However, he doesn’t look back on the season fondly. “In one word: drama”, said Castillion after signing his new agreement. “I was only fit for a total of three months. Moreover, I was ridden with injury. So this contract is very special, and it’s great that Ajax wants to continue with me.”
He can now focus on recovering from his knee injury and look forward to next season. When Castillion becomes fit again, he’ll be part of the first team in preparation for the 2011-2012 season.
Head coach Frank de Boer has confidence in the Ajax player, who joined the Ajax youth training program in 2005. “Geoffrey is a great talent. He has speed, he can score, and he’s strong. It’s a shame for him and for us that he was injured for so much of the season. When he’s fit again, and when he learns what it’s really about at the top level in sports, he can grow even more. This new contract shows that we have faith in him. He could become a great forward for Ajax.”
