Bayern arrive in ArenA

The press room of the Amsterdam ArenA was booked solid Tuesday afternoon. Bayern coach Felix Magath and star player Roy Makaay came out to meet the press. Both men indicated they have not come to Amsterdam just for fun.

,,We might not have to play for the points, but there's still some money at stake", Magath said candidly. Bayern, just like Juventus, are already certain of qualification in this Group C of the UEFA Champions League, but the Germans would like to add some more euros to the club's budget. If the Italian group leaders have the same intention - and considering the financial situation of most Italian clubs that would be logical - and defeat Maccabi in Tel-Aviv, there are no problems for Ajax. If the Israelis lose, Ajax go the the UEFA Cup, regardless of their result against FC Bayern München at home.

The Germans have come to Holland with 18 players. ,,But I don't have the line-up in my head yet'', said the coach. ,,Some players have not been able to train the past days, but that does not mean that they won't play." The German press had gotten word that Kahn would not be on goal. ,,It is too early to say something about that now'', said Magath. ,,He has not trained either in the past days, that's all I've said. I don't know if I will play him.''

Roy Makaay, scorer of three goals in the first match, is fit and on great form. ,,We want to win the last match in the first round as well'', said the sharpshooter. ,,Then we go into the second round with a good feeling.''

The striker, with six goals second on the top scorers list of the UEFA Champions League behind Ruud van Nistelrooy, was asked whether he is involved in a personal battle with his fellow Dutchman, who has scored eight goals so far. ,,He won't play Wednesday because he is injured, I heard...'' Makaay has ambitions. ,,Well I am glad that we got through to the second round and that I was able to help us get there.''

Half of his scoring output came in the match against Ajax. ,,I won't say that that match was the turning point for us. We already played well in stretches before. Against Ajax we played well for ninety minutes. We have continued that form the past weeks. Only on Saturday did we lose points unnecessarily. But we have great fun playing football and we show that too. We have to more matches to play before the winter break and we want to win them both."
