Ajax and Vurnon Anita have reached an agreement to extend his contract, which ran until June 30, 2012. The new, improved contract runs until June 30, 2014. “This is more than I could have dreamed. I’m very proud”, he said after the signing.
The extension of his contract, which had been valid until June 30, 2012, is a reward for his hard work. Ajax is confident in Anita’s work ethic, outstanding qualities and speed for the coming years. The multifunctional player is extremely happy with his fourth Ajax contract. “This means a lot to me, because Ajax is my first club, I’m still playing here, and became champion this year. It was an easy decision to sign up for longer. I can still learn a lot. There will be many great games to play with Ajax.
Anita has been with Ajax since E1. Twelve years later, he’s a steady fixture on the first team. The cheerful player had something of a dip during the second half of the season, when new coach Frank de Boer played another left back. “I fought my way back into the squad and, and played the games I always would have played. And we became champion”, he says with a smile, after signing.
The 22 year old player wants to be of even more value to Ajax 1. “I can carry a heavier load next season by helping the guys in the youth teams.” With his experience, this should be possible. General Manager Rik van den Boog also emphasized the responsibility that he brings as an experienced player. “There’s more responsibility now. You’ll be taking some of the young guys under your wing. That’s different than last year.”
How will Anita celebrate? “Very quietly”, he says with a smile. “Now I’m going home to rest, and tomorrow I’m going to Curaçao on holiday.’’
Coach Frank de Boer is pleased with Anita’s contract extension. The head coach also feels that the better contract is a reward for the multifunctional player’s hard work. “When I came as interim coach in December, I selected another left back, but he fought his way back into the team as a midfielder. That’s symbolic of who he is: a fantastic player with a great mentality. He’s been of great value in the last weeks of the season, because he can be played in several positions. I’m definitely happy that he extended his contract.”
Anita was born on April 4th, 1989 in Willemstad, Curaçao. He’s played in Ajax’s youth training since E1. He made his debut in the first team on March 19, 2006 during the FC Groningen – Ajax (3-2) match. He’s played 106 official matches in Ajax’s first match, scoring five times.
