Ajax and Newcastle United FC have reached an agreement for the transfer of Vurnon Anita. With the club moving into the English Premier League, effective immediately, a sum of EUR 8,5 million is estimated. The player was under contract with Ajax until June 30, 2014.
Frank de Boer has mixed feelings about Anita’s departure for Newcastle United. “Yes, of course we’re pleased for Vurnon that this transfer happened. He’s a great guy who’s always done more than his best for Ajax. He knows like nobody else how to make his own interests secondary to the team interests. His departure is a very big loss for us. People keep referring to last season, when he played a very big role in the series of wins we had, which led to the
championship. That’s all true. But he was of great value to us before that, too.”
And so the Ajax coach watches yet another player leave for England. Jan Vertonghen, Luis Suarez and Thomas Vermaelen have made the same move in past years. “It’s part of our club that we train players, they develop themselves in the first team, and after several years, they make a move to an international top competition. We do our utmost to keep them as long as possible. It’s always a shame when a player leaves, but I naturally want to wish Vurnon all the best at Newcastle.”
De Boer is clear about the vacant position. “There are players at Jong Ajax who can fill this position well; Fabian Sporkslede, Ilan Boccara and Joeri de Kamps. And there are also players who are currently with the A-selection who can fill the spot. Eyong Enoh is an outstanding defending midfielder, but he’s still injured and can’t play on Sunday against NEC. But I feel it’s too early, and not very smart to say now how we’re going to fill in that spot.
Anita was born on April 4, 1989, in Willemstad, Curacao. He’s played with Ajax since E1 in the academy. The midfielder made his debut for Ajax at age 16 on March 19, 2006, during the FC Groningen – Ajax (3-2) competition match. He’s played 152 official competition matches for Ajax, scoring 7 times.
Anita won the national championship twice with Ajax (2011 and 2012), the KNVB Cup once (2010) and the Johan Cruijff Plate once (2007).
