Ajax ended its training camp in Austria with a friendly match win against Wacker Innsbruck. In the Silberstadt Arena in Schwarz, Ajax defeated the club, which was degraded out of the Austrian Bundesliga last season, 5-1.
In a week that saw Siem de Jong depart for Newcastle United and Ricardo van Rhijn suffer a hamstring injury, Ajax ended its training week in Schwaz. On the day that the Netherlands was in the throes of the Netherlands – Costa Rica World Cup match, Ajax played its second friendly match of the pre-season. After a 13-1 win against the amateurs from SDC Putten, opponent Wacker was at a higher level.
Ajax started the first half with Kenneth Vermeer in the goal and, in the back, Ruben Ligeon, Mike van der Hoorn, new captain Niklas Moisander and Nicolai Boilesen. Midfield consisted of Davy Klaassen, Nick Viergever and Lerin Duarte. Lasse Schöne, Arek Milik and Ricardo Kishna formed the offense in Schwaz.
The goals fell like ripe fruit in the stadium, about 20 kilometers east of Innbruck. Ruben Ligeon saw his shot sail over Wacker’s keeper and disappear into the goal during the second minute: 0-1. It was the preface to a first half which saw many goals. Thomas Hirschofer scored against first, but after that Davy Klaassen and Lerin Duarte (free kick) ensured that a 1-3 lead was on the scoreboard at thirteen minutes. On a pass from Lasse Schöne, Arek Milik ensured that the halftime score was 1-4.
After the break, new faces came onto the field for Ajax. Originally, Kolbeinn Sigthórsson was going to be one of these eleven names, but because he experienced irritations to his right knee during warm-up, he remained sidelined as a precaution. Tobias Sana replaced him and witnessed a goal shortly after. Richairo Zivkovic scored Ajax’s fifth goal from nearby. Fortunately it was the last goal of the afternoon, as Wolfgang Schober kept his goal clean after that.
Ajax will train in Amsterdam next week. After that, the national champion leave for De Lutte on Monday, July 14, for their traditional training camp.
