The season's first clash between Ajax and Feyenoord ended in a 2-2 draw. Feyenoord twice came back from behind and were happier than Ajax with the result.
The result of the Dutch Classic would not be crucial, Marco van Basten said on Friday before the match. The season still lasts too long for that, but winning in the Kuip stadium would have been a major shot in the arm at this point in the season. But winning was not in the cards this time for Ajax. The match ended in 2-2, just like last season. ,,We could have gone home the winners", Van Basten said. ,,But we did not use the spaces we got. And you can also question some of the decisions of the referee, but I won't hide behind that. It's just a pity."
Ajax began in the same lineup as in the UEA Cup match against FK Borac three days earlier. Latest signing Eyong Enoh replaced Siem de Jong on the bench.
The Classic started badly for Ajax. Within ten minutes the team lost Miralem Sulejmani to an injury. Leonardo took his place. Feyenoord had the initiative in the early stages, but Ajax took over ater fifteen minutes. The first chances were for the visitors. In the 17th minute, Klaas Jan Huntelaar tested goalkeeper Henk Timmer with a strike from distance. Five minutes later Jeffrey Sarpong fired just on the wrong side of the post. Sarpong did score in the 38th minute. From a cross by Luis Suarez he struck with his left foot: 0-1. Not long after, Timmer brought down Leonardo who had broken through. But referee Braamhaar did not show the goalkeeper a red card but a yellow one.
Feyenoord began the second half energetically and scored a deserved equaliser after 50 minutes. Jon Dahl Tomasson headed in the ball when the Ajax defence could not clear it from the box. Ajax took the lead again in the 68th minute when Suarez moved past several defenders and gave the ball to Huntelaar, who scored with ease.
Feyenoord played all or nothing in the closing stages and brought on another forward in Michael Mols. Van Basten reacted by bringing on Eyong Enoh for Sarpong. It was Enoh's debut for Ajax. Van Basten's team seemed certain of victory when Luis Suarez was brought down in the box by André Bahia. Braamhaar did not give the penalty but awarded Feyenoord one on the other side when he decided that Emanuelson had fouled Mols. Tomasson converted the spot kick. There were more chances for both teams after that but no more goals. And that made Feyenoord happier than it did Ajax.
