Ajax has signed Matthijs de Ligt (Leiderdorp, August 12, 1999). The under 19 junior has been playing in Ajax’s youth academy since the age of nine. The young defender signs a contract that is effective per August 12 until June 30, 2018.
This is de Ligt’s first contract. “I’m so proud. I’ve played with Ajax’s youth for a long time. Now, at sixteen years old, I’m signing a contract, and there is really nothing that could be better than that.”
De Ligt has had a good football season, during which he moved from the Under 17 team to the Under 19s. Moreover, he won two prizes in 2015. In April this year, De Ligt was selected as the best player of the ABN AMRO Future Cup. During the Copa Amsterdam, he received the honor of ‘Best player of the tournament’. The two-legged defender also played for the Dutch nationals Under 17 team this season.
Wim Jonk: “Matthijs is what I call a modern central defender. He’s big and strong and especially well-rounded. He’s two-legged, had a good pass and can keep an overview. He has a naturally good presence and he’s a real winning type with a good focus. It’s now up to him to develop himself further so that he can become a strong leader who can pass on his positive attitude to his fellow players.”
