Ajax has signed keeper Indy Groothuizen (Alkmaar, July 22, 1996). The Under 19 junior has played in Ajax’s youth academy since 2008. He signs a contract effective retroactively per January 1, 2015, until June 30, 2018.
Groothuizen made his professional football debut on December 8, 2014, with the Ajax Reserves in the Jupiler League Ajax Reserves – RKC Waalwijk match (3-2). He’s played a total of four official matches with the reserves. This is the talented keeper’s first contract. “I’m very proud, this is a reward for years of hard work”, said Groothuizen about his contract.
In practice, keepers are less likely to sign professional contracts than field players. “As a keeper, you sometimes need to be patient”, says Groothuizen. “When I joined the team to Qatar, I felt that the team wanted to continue with me. My goal now is to stay fit and to keep knocking on the first team’s door. I hope I’ll succeed in playing in the ArenA as Ajax’s first keeper in a few years.”
Keeper coach René Stam is proud of his keeper. “Indy has many talents, he has good posture, he’s two-footed, proficient, and very good tactically. In summary, he has everything that makes a great keeper. This season he’ll alternate between playing matches for the Under 19s and the Ajax Reserves. Next year, he’ll step over completely to the Ajax Reserves.”
