Ajax have reached agreement about the transfer of George Ogararu from Steaua Bucharest to Ajax. Ogararu's contract with Ogararu will run for four years, starting on 1 July 2006.
The Romanian right back was born in Bucharest on 3 February 1980. He has been a mainstay in Steaua's first team for several years. Ogararu is currently in first place in the Romanian league table with his club. He made his debut for the Romanian national team on 26 March last, in the match Romania - Holland.
George Ogararu came to Steaua Bucharest when he was eight years old and except for 18 months, when he played on loan for amongst others Otelul Galati, he has always played there. He is very happy about his transfer to Amsterdam. ,,Ajax are a very big club, one of the biggest in Europe. They have won many trophies in the past”, says the Romanian. ,,You always want to play for this club!”
The right wingback, who lists his good technique and strong positioning among his better qualities, has plenty of ambitions. ,,I hope to win the championship and the Cup every year. Those are the goals that fit a big club.''
Ogararu is not the first Romanian to play for Ajax, but he does not know Bogdan Lobont or Nicolae Mitea very well. ,,Cristian Chivu I do know well. I played with him on national youth teams in the past. I talked to him recently and he said: ‘This is a very good choice’. I have seen Nicolae Mitea at the national team a few times. I hope he can help me find my way here.”
The defender played his only international match with Romania against Holland earlier this year, when he played in defence with among others former Ajax player Chivu. Romania lost 2-0 against the Dutch.
When the season in Romania is over, Ogararu will enjoy soem time with his family and take a vacation, before coming to Amsterdam. ,,I am very eager to get started”, says the defender.
