In their first home match of the new season, Ajax booked a draw against Italina giants Internazionale. Santiago Solari gave the visitors an early lead, but a few minutes before the end, Wesley Sneijder levelled the sides. It was a deserved reward for a strong second-half showing by the home team.
Despite the absence of some big names, Inter boss Roberto Mancini could still field a more than able team in the LG Amsterdam Tournament match against Ajax. The home sidehad quite a new look, with new signings Jaap Stam, George Ogararu, Kenneth Perez and Gabri making their first appearance in the ArenA.
After a careful opening phase by both teams, Inter grabbed the lead out of nowhere when goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg could not hang on to a shot by Stankovic. The ball ended up with Santiago Solari, who had no trouble putting away the rebound: 0-1.
Ajax had the most possession in the first half, but could not find a way through the solid Italian defence. Only when Gabri and Cordoba got in each other's faces and a scuffle resulted, Ajax seemed revived.
That did not lead to big chances in the first half, but after halftime the home side went from strength to strength; winning many balls and being more dangerous on offence. Sub Markus Rosenberg tried his luck, Jaap Stam came close with a header and Wesley Sneijder gfired from distance. Klaas Jan Huntelaar should have had a penalty when he was pulled to the ground twice in a row. Especially the second time, when he was in place when Mauro Rosales crossed and Cordoba drew him away, a spot kick would have been deserved.
When no one was expecting it anymore, Ajax did come alongside. Sneijder curled the ball from the edge of the box behind the surprised goalkeeper Toldo: 1-1.
Ajax could be happy with the result and especially the way the side played in the second half. Coach Henk ten Cate agreed: ,,We showed too much respect for our opponent in the first half. After halftime we put aside our fears and showed what we are capable of. In the second half we put them under more pressure and at times played better than Inter. That resulted in a wonderful goal, also a deserved goal. we deserved a draw against this good opponent.''
