With the biggest win of the season Ajax entertained the crowd in the sold-out Amsterdam ArenA. The home side defeated Willem II by 7-0. ,,We put on a nice show for the supporters”, coach Marco van Basten said.
Ajax, with Jan Vertonghen back in the lineup, ran over the visitors from the beginning. Luis Suarez found Dario Cvitanich in the second minute and the striker made it 1-0. Ajax never looked back and Willem II, who had won their home match against Ajax it the start of the season, let it all happen. After goals by Eyong Enoh and Dario Cvitanich - good header from a cross by Gregory van der Wiel - it was 3-0 after only 20 minutes. The crowd were loving every minute of it. The Ajax fans started to chant 'ten', and Ajax were on that schedule in after 45 minutes. Arjan Swinkels brought down Van der Wiel in the penalty box and Luis Suarez scored from the spot after 35 minutes. Urby Emanuelson struck at the end of the half and made it 5-0. Marco van Basten took off Rob Wielaert, as a precaution against the defender getting a yellow card and being suspended for the match against PSV next week. Toby Alderweireld replaced Wielaert. ,,We continued with the same good attitude in the second half”, Van Basten said. ,,We still had many chances and we put on a good show for the fans until the end.” Luis Suarez added two goals to his total in the second half, giving him 20 goals for the season. But despite the personal success of Suarez, this match was all about the team. ,,I am very pleased with and proud of the team”, Van Basten said. For his colleague of Willem II, Alfons Groenendijk, it was a different story. The coach, until last season assistent coach at Ajax, felt as if he had been steamrolled. ,,It was not the the return I had hoped for”, Groenendijk said. ,,This was the longest afternoon I have ever spent on a football pitch. As an afficionado I enjoyed seeing Suarez and Aissati and Ajax's great show. But it is no fun playing the part of an extra in that show.”
