Ajax has placed Marcel Keizer (head coach), Hennie Spijkerman (assistant coach) and Dennis Bergkamp (individual coach and member of the technical heart) on non-active duty. The club leadership will enter discussions with them to end their contracts.
The club leadership has insufficient confidence that Ajax’s ambitions will be realized with them. The disappointing achievements on the field were partly responsible for this decision. In Dennis Bergkamp’s case, differences of opinion concerning the execution of the technical policy exist on top of that.
General Manager Edwin van der Sar: “We experienced a difficult summer and messy start of the season. Everyone knows this. In terms of our athletic performance, elimination from the European tournaments was the low point. In the months following that, Marc Overmars and I have spoken extensively about the first team’s inconsistency. If we continue this way, we do not have confidence that we will reach the level that Ajax strives to achieve. I’m very sad about this. We, as management together with the Advisory Board, have not made this decision lightly, and we are grateful to Marcel, Dennis and Hennis for their efforts for the club.”
