Ajax poorly rewarded with point against Sparta Prague

For almost the entire time, Ajax dominated their first Champions League match of the season against Sparta Prague. But you would never know judging on the result. Luckily, Wesley Sneijder prevented what happened too often last season: being better but still losing in the end. Sparta Prague - Ajax: 1-1.

,,It's incredible that we have to be happy with a point after this match'', said coach Danny Blind. He chose for the same eleven as in the match against league side Willem II. Ajax dominated the first half, having 70 per cent of possession. Striker Markus Rosenberg played well in the first half, but should have shown his best quality: score. He, and Wesley Sneijder and Ryan Babel had the best chances in the first half to give Ajax the deserved lead.

Sparta Praag played without any idea, and only attacked when Ajax lost the ball.

Ajax again were much better after halftime, but it was the home side that took the lead. Substitute Matusovic fired from at least 20 metres out and Vonk never had a chance: 1-0.
Ajax went on the attack after that and Ryan Babel came close with a shot on the side bar. Ajax kept going, however, and were rewarded for that in the extra time. Sneijder fired from outside and gave his team the goal they deserved when he levelled the score: 1-1.

,,It's a missed chance that we don't go home with three points'' Blind said. ,,We dominated in the first half and created many chances. Then you ought to be leading 2-0 at halftime. In the second half, we started to fall behind. But hey, it was a great goal by that Czech. I bet he cannot make more than one out of every hundred that way. For us it's sad that we don't earn more points in such a match.''
