Eight days ago Ajax played their last European match of the season. After Club Brugge removed the Amsterdam side from the European stage, NAC Breda did the same in the national cup. Ajax lost at home to NAC with 1-0.
In the last league match, against FC Utrecht, Ajax scored the winning goal from the only real chance the side got. Against NAC, the opposite was the case. Ajax had many good chances, but failed to score. Ali Boussabon, from one of NAC's rare chances in the second half, decided the match in the 54th minute: 0-1.
,,We had a problem dealing with the disappointment of being knocked out of the European competiton'', said coach Ronald Koeman. ,,We also have a problem with our defensive transition. During the winter break, we will work hard on that. Football is not only what you do in possession, but also how you play if you don't have the ball.''
The disappointment was great with Ajax, who had at least four good chances in the second half but seemed unable to beat NAC goalkeeper Van Zwam. The elimination from the Amstel Cup meant the second Cup-exit in eight days for Koeman's young side.
