Ajax has reached an agreement with Christian Bager Poulsen. The agreement is still tentative, pending administrative and medical paperwork. After this is completed, the transfer-free player will sign an agreement in Amsterdam for a duration of two seasons, until June 30, 2014.
Poulsen was born on February 28, 1980, in Asnæs, Denmark. The defending midfielder played last season for Evian Thonon Gaillard FC in France. Before that,
the former Danish international was active for Liverpool FC, Juventus FC, Sevilla FC, FC Schalke 04 and FC Kopenhagen.
“We’re very happy that he’s chosen to come to play with Ajax, because he could have gone to several other clubs in Europe”, says director of football affairs Marc Overmars. “Christian Poulsen is the kind of midfielder who corrects and keeps things sharp. He’s a leader, both on and off the field. And we can definitely use that, given our young group.”
Overmars: “He’s in Denmark right now, but he was here with his wife yesterday. I showed him the facilities at our training complex, de Toekomst, and of course
the ArenA. The also looked at houses in Amsterdam and visited a school.”
“Poulsen has built up a lot of top level international experience in the past years, both in top clubs in big competitions, and also in several tournaments in the
Danish national team, with whom he’s played almost 100 interlands and was often the captain. He’s recently retired from the Danish national team in order to
focus 100% on club football. That’s also an advantage for Ajax.”
“Everything will be finalized in the next few days, and the intention is that he joins the group as soon as possible.”
