Ajax leave the pitch as winners after defeat

Cheering after a loss, in the turbulent 2005-2006 season, everything proved to be possible for the Ajax squad of coach Danny Blind. Wesley Sneijder capped off his turn as a second-half sub with a goal and his team captured the desired ticket for the preliminary round of the Champions League.

Ajax had a really hard time in the North of Holland. Especially in the firtst hour the waves of attack of the home team crippled the visitors. For a long time, Ajax could keep their hopes up of reaching halftime without any damage. Goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg kept his team in the race. But a long throw-in to Erik Nevland led to the 1-0. The forward received the ball and fired it past Stekelenburg.

After 60 minutes, back Bruno Silva gave the Euroborg stadium another reason to go berserk. The wingback struck with force and erased the deficit from the match in the ArenA: 2-0.

With substitutes Ryan Babel and Wesley Sneijder, Ajax finally got some more grip on the lobsided match. The liberating goal came off the foot of Sneijder. He fired it in from some distance. With the 2-1, the visitors came off the pitch as winners, despite the minimal loss.

It was part one of Ajax's mission this week: now with the Champions League entry locked up, the side have to deal with PSV in the Cup final on Sunday.
