Ajax In Goalless Draw

Ajax Cape Town were made to rue a succession of missed opportunities as they could only manage a goalless draw against fellow strugglers Bush Bucks at Newlands on Sunday afternoon.

A win for the Warriors would have put them well clear of Trott Moloto’s men in the final relegation spot, but as it turned out they failed to use the numerous chances to fall their way.

In fact, they were up against 10 men for the last 30 minutes after Sibusiso Dabi was sent off for two bookable offences but, despite keeping the visitors pinned back in their half, the final touch was missing.

Ajax started the game in great style as they dominated from the first whistle.

They could have taken the lead after nine minutes, but Shane Poggenpoel couldn’t keep his free header down.

They were desperately unlucky 15 minutes later when Brent Carelse saw his powerful header from Dillon Sheppard’s corner cleared off the line.

However, it wasn’t all one-way traffic and Bucks almost grabbed the opener in a good 10 minute spell for them.

Ajax right-back Andile Sixaba did well to block Zibi’s goalbound shot, before Phillip Mofokeng spurned a great chance when his free volley went wide.

The home side started the second half like a house on fire and any one of Alfred Phiri, Nathan Paulse and Carelse could have scored the opener.

But it was to be the story of the day as more chances came and went, and the Warriors will now be looking to the game against Jomo Cosmos on Wednesday to ensure their survival.
