Ajax have their wish granted against NEC

,,It was a good day for Ajax??, coach Ronald Koeman said after the 6-0 defeat of NEC. PSV?s loss to Feyenoord and the big margin with which Ajax won made it such a good day. Ajax regained the top position in the league table and almost made up the difference in goal balance with PSV. ,,Before the match we were wishing to achieve such a score. It is nice that it happened??, Koeman said.

NEC had never managed to win in the Amsterdam Arena, and in the last few years the team from Nijmegen had not even scored. Sunday, Ajax’s Australian goalkeeper Joey Didulica had next to nothing to do for the entire match.

Trabelsi, the defender who seemed fully recovered from an injury, had to be protected against himself. Koeman: ,,That is why I took him off. Physically he is almost overburdened. But he kept going, running up and down. Sometimes I wish he would just stay in his position and play out the match.’’

Thanks to Trabelsi’s efforts, Ajax took the lead in the 16th minute. The Tunisian defender made one of his famous rushes on the right wing and crossed to Mido who headed the ball in: 1-0. ,,Because of the danger of Trabelsi and the quality of Mido we went up 1-0’’, said Koeman. ,,But we seemed to be sleeping for most of the first half. We were offside seven times. We were not sharp.’’

The crowd also showed their disapproval when the sides went into the dressing room at half time. Koeman’s eleven must have taken it to heart. In the second half they blew away the opponent. Mido and Andy van der Meyde quickly made it 3-0.

The squad stayed focussed after that and went on the hunt for more. ,,I have to give them a big compliment for that’’, said Ronald Koeman. ,,The team took the responsibility to play hard until the end. To entertain the fans. I though that was very professional.’’

With De Jong, Witschge and Boukhari on for Trabelsi, Pienaar and Van der Meyde, Ajax danced over the pitch. The team thought up eye-catching combinations. Witschge hit the crossbar - the third time Ajax hit the aluminium - before Van der Vaart finished Maxwell’s cross: 4-0. Chivu had a chance to score number five but he hesitated and was fouled by NEC’s Youssouf Hersi at the cost of a red card and a penalty. Andre Bergdølmo impeccably put the penalty away for 5-0.

Ajax saved the best goal for last. Nourdin Boukhari fired one in beautifully in the 90th minute to end the second half in style.
