For the fifth time in a row, the AEGON Future Cup will be held at de Toekomst Sports park during Easter weekend. Ajax.nl is featuring the tournament participants in five issues. In this first edition: hosts Ajax B2 and the Anderlecht B-juniors.
Anderlecht is, without a doubt, one of the favourites to win the title. The top Belgian club has participated in the tournament three times, and has won the title twice, in 2011 and 2013. Interesting fact: both finals were played against Ajax, which both times just came short of their Belgian opponents. The purple – white team made a strong impact in both editions. The 2011 trophy was won without even allowing a single goal against. A great statistic, and it’s also noteworthy that a few players from that team have made their debut in the first team since then. Such as the proficient Dennis Praet, who was selected as player of the tournament in 2011. A new generation is undoubtedly eagerly waiting to walk in his footsteps.
No football team wants to look bad on its home turf. Ajax B2 is hoping to conquer for the big prize once again this year at the Aegon Future Cup. Earlier, the team succeeded in doing that in 2010 and 2012, when they defeated China under 17 and Manchester United respectively in the finals.
Last year, B2 came close to winning the title again, but they were defeated 0-2 by a very strong Anderlecht. Nonetheless, it was a great experience at the Toekomst for that team, and very educational. There is a reason that this tournament is seen as a true measure against the best teenagers of Europe.
