Ajax won its second game in the Florida Cup on Saturday. They defeated Sao Paolo by 2-4. De Brazilian team took the lead twice, but goals by Donny van de Beek, Dusan Tadic, Kasper Dolberg and David Neres ensured the win for the Ajacieds.
On Thursday, Ajax had played to a 2-2 tie against another Brazilian opponent, Flamengo. The duel between this team and Eintracht Frankfurt would determine Ajax’s final ranking in the Florida Cup. But the Amsterdam team didn’t join in the awards ceremony. Shortly after the game’s end, Ajax headed to the Orlando airport for the return trip to Amsterdam.
Starting line-up in action
Ajax kicked off the Florida Cup with a tie against Flamego and Erik ten Hag had left the bulk of his regular starting players on the sideline for that game. Two days later, roughly one week before competition play resumes with a game against Heerenveen, Ten Hag started many of this regular players.
Ajax initially had some difficulty finding its rhythm against last season’s number 5 team in Brazilian. São Paulo kept the doors closed and the Ajacieds were unable to create many openings.
The South American team took the 1-0 lead midway through the first half thanks to a counter. After an attack on the left, the ball landed at Hermanes’ feet, and he pulled the trigger without hesitation: 1-0.
Increase pressure, tighten the screws
Ajax went on to increase the pressure, but this didn’t lead to any big opportunities. The danger came mostly from the 2nd line, via a shot by Ziyech (just wide) and Lasse Schone (free kick saved by keeper Jean).
After the break, Ajax tightened the screws. Van de Beek had a big opportunity, but stumbled on Jean again. But it was just a matter of time, as Ajax made good again in the 56th minute. Shortly after Nenê had missed a big opportunity, Tadic opened up to Rasmus Kristensen, who found Van de Beek: 1-1.
Chance for Tadic
Ajax also showed character. In the 71st minute, the referee pointed to the spot after a foul on Dolberg. Tadic knew what do to with this great opportunity: 2-2. In the 78th minute, the roles were reversed. Dolberg rounded off, but thanks to Tadic’s prep work. Neres put the final nail in his old club’s coffin in extra time, with his 4-2 goal.
Thanks to this , the Ajacieds can prepare for the long trip home feeling good.
