During the UEFA Champions League group phase draw in Monaco, Ajax has been paired with FC Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Apoel Nicosia. The national champion is in pool F with the Spanish, French and Cypriot teams. Ajax will begin – provisionally – on Wednesday, September 17, with a home game against Paris Saint-Germain.
Last season, Ajax drew FC Barcelona for the first time on the European stage. Ajax lost the away game 4-0, but coach Frank de Boer – a former FC Barcelona player himself – led his team to a 2-1 upset of the top Spanish team at home. At FC Barcelona, Ajax will meet two familiar faces: Luis Suarez and Thomas Vermaelen. The former Ajax players transferred to the Catalan power house this summer from England. Suarez came over from Liverpool, and Vermaelen from Arsenal. An interesting fact is that Suarez is suspended until the end of October due to the biting incident at the World Cup. The Uruguayan will therefore miss his team’s first duel against Ajax (October 21 in Barcelona) but he will be eligible to play during the team’s return match at the Amsterdam ArenA .
Ajax has never met Paris Sant-Germain on the European stage. The French champion currently boasts several familiar faces on its roster: Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Maxwell and Gregory van der Wiel.
Ajax and Apoel Nicosia have never played each other in any official match. The Cypriots qualified for the group phase this week thanks to a big win against the Danish team Aalborg.
