Ajax have drawn IK Start from Norway in the first round of the UEFA Cup. The matches will be played on Thursdays 14 and 28 September.
Ajax will start with an away match.
The match in Norway will be played in the Lillestrøm stadium, which has a capacity of around 10,000 spectators. The Kristiansand Stadium, where Start normally play their home matches, is not suited for UEFA Cup football.
The last time Ajax played in the UEFA Cup was in February of 2005. Ajax were eliminated by Auxerre, after which coach Ronald Koeman resigned.
IK Start qualified for the UEFA Cup by eliminating Skala Itrottarfelag (Faroe) and, after a nerve-wrecking penalty series, defeating Drogheda United (Ireland). The team from Kristiansand had won their home match by 1-0 and lost by 1-0 in Ireland, making a penalty series necessary. The Norwegian team won by 11-10.
IK Start finished second in Norway in 2005, behind Valerenga. Start play in yellow jerseys, black shorts and yellow socks and have blue jerseys, white shorts and blue socks as their away kit. Midfielder Jóhannes Harðarson (Iceland) and forwards Ben Wright (England), Stefan Bärlin (Sweden), Todi Jónsson (Faroe) and David Nielsen (Denmark) are the foreign players in the Norwegian side.
