Ajax has increased the pressure on PSV. In the away game against ADO Den Haag, the Amsterdam team posted a whopping 1-5 win. Goals were scored by Donny van de Beek, Dusan Tadic, Hakim Ziyech (2x) and Kasper Dolberg. With his substitution, Lasse Schöne reached 269 games in Ajax 1, matching Sören Lerby’s record as the foreign player with the most games in the first team.
While many were preoccupied with Lasse Schöne’s impending record, as the foreign player with the most games played in Ajax 1, coach Erik ten Hag elected to leave the veteran off the squad. This was to the benefit of Kasper Dolberg, who formed the offense with Hakim Ziyech and David Neres. The coach explained his choice prior to the match: “First, we feel that Kasper is getting better and better. We’re also looking at ADO’s last line, where mobility is lacking in some areas.”
Both Neres and Dolberg scored in the home game against ADO, which ended in a 5-1 win. ADO’s top scorer Nasser El Khayati was absent for that game. The 12-time successful centre forward was present in the stadium in The Hague. And Ajax felt that.
El Khayati scores
Despite Ajax having a better phase, during which Neres came clost to scoring twice and Frenkie de Jong was awarded a penalty kick, it was El Khayati who scored the opening goal in the 36th minute.
In the lead by halftime
It was a shame, because Ajax was the better team at that moment. But the Amsterdam team had a reply ready. Daley Blind made, as he had earlier in the afternoon, a perfect pass. This time, the receiver took full advantage of this gift. Donny van de Beek scored the tying goal beautifully after just three minutes of being down.
Ajax even took the lead before the break. The ball, following the video referee’s recommendation after a foul by Meijers (celebrating 200 Eredivisie games) on Dolberg, went to the spot. He scored his 16th Eredivise goal and his 5th from a penalty kick: 1-2.
Lasse matches record for foreign players in Ajax 1
The second half started without many highlights. In the 74th minute, however, Hakim Ziyech, who until then had been playing a low-key game, took a great shot and raised the margin to 2 goals. Just prior to ADO kicking off, Ten Hag decided to pull Tadic out and Lasse Schöne came onto the field. The Dane thus matched Søren Lerby’s record as the foreign player with the most duels in Ajax 1, namely 269.
Ajax runs with it
He was on the field in time to congratulate his fellow Dane, Kasper Dolberg, on his 10th Eredivisie goal. Dolberg had brought Ajax into the 1-4 lead in the 78th minute. It was Dolberg’s last play, as Klaas Jan Huntelaar came in for him in the last 10 minutes. The striker could potentially reach a milestone of his own, but he didn’t manage to do this. He did come close to scoring his 100th Eredivisie goal in the 83rd minute, but it was Ziyech who made good in this attack, 1-5, reaching the final score for this afternoon.
