After weeks of uncertainty in which PSV narrowed the margin, Ajax grabbed the national title on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over NAC Breda in the Amsterdam ArenA. It was the 29th Dutch championship for Ajax.
NAC were visibly impressed by the electric atmosphere in the Amsterdam ArenA. Ajax had lost both earlier encounters with the team from Breda, but this time the home side were superior, even without the suspended Tomás Galásek who was ably replaced by Man of the Match Anthony Obodai. Wesley Sneijder made it 1-0 and Zlatan Ibrahimovic doubled the margin shortly before halftime.
In the second half not much happened. Ajax were just waiting for the 90 minutes to be up so they could celebrate the championship and NAC did not have the power to make it Ajax any more difficult. When the final whistle came, the Ajax players were overjoyed and started celebrating with the fans.
Ajax then received the championship shield from legendary former coach Rinus Michels. Vice-captain Tomás Galásek and captain Rafael van der Vaart accepted the shield and another trophy from league sponsor Holland Casino Eredivisie.
Maxwell was voted best player of the season by the supporters and he received the Rinus Michels trophy. The Marco van Basten trophy for best young talent went to Romanian winger Nicolae Mitea.
Then it was off to downtown Amsterdam, where the team celebrated their title with tens of thousands of fans on the 'Leidseplein'. The players were visibly moved by the fantastic reception they got from the crowd. Rafael van der Vaart showed the shield to the fans. None of the players had ever had the chance to share this moment with so many supporters right in the middle of the city and they enjoyed it thoroughly.
For Johnny Heitinga, it was a dream come true. ,,Last year I was doing rehab for my injured knee and now I'm here. This is fantastic.'' Zlatan Ibrahimovic was equally pleased. ,,I have never experienced anything like this. It looks as if I will be staying with Ajax next season.'' ,,I am so happy'', said Maxwell. ,,Hopefully we will be here next year as well.''
