Ajax recaptured the lead in the Dutch league table with a 6-0 victory against Willem II. With six different goal scorers and Wesley Sonck as the best player, Ajax can prepare for the UEFA Champions League match against Club Brugge with confidence.
Coach Ronald Koeman kept Rafael van der Vaart on the bench as a precaution. He was replaced in the starting line-up by Wesley Sneijder. Van der Vaart was slightly injured, but would have been able to play if necessary. But Ajax managed fine without him. Wesley Sonck, playing on the right wing next to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, quickly made it 1-0 from a pass by Tomás Galásek and set up his fellow striker Ibrahimovic for 2-0 after 29 minutes.
With Yakubu as Petri Pasanen's replacement after halftime Ajax quickly put the match out of reach for the opponent from Tilburg. Ibrahimovic found a wide-open Wesley Sneijder for 3-0 and Victor Sikora, who came on for Ibrahimovic, fired his almost first touch of the ball behind the Willem II goalkeeper to make it 4-0.
Ajax put on a show for the fans in the second half with beautiful one-touch football. Tom Soetaers, the left winger, thundered the ball past goalie Zois for 5-0 and Steven Pienaar finished a good combination with Sonck and Sneijder: 6-0.
,,This was good for the confidence of the team after the loss against NAC last week'', Koeman said. ,,And also for the confidence of some of the players who have had a difficult time since they came here. We are looking forward to carrying this form on to the match against Club Brugge on Wednesday.''
