Ajax and Ronald Koeman part ways

The managing board and committee of Ajax have had a meeting with Ronald Koeman on Friday morning. During this meeting the Ajax coach indicated he wishes to end the collaboration immediately.

Ronald Koeman provided the following statement: “I have requested the managing board and the committee of Ajax to terminate our contract. I have to be honest to myself and to Ajax. Yesterday's result was the last straw. I no longer have the strength and the energy to get over this and make the team perform better. I managed one time before, after the bad result against Maccabi Tel-Aviv, but I cannot do it again. If am not fully motivated and driven, I cannot and should not be the coach of Ajax. After three years and three months our succesful collaboration comes to an end. I enjoyed working at Ajax during this period, and I greatly appreciated the support of the managing board and committee.”

Managing director Arie van Eijden regrets the event. “Ajax are of course disappointed with the current season. Yesterday's result had no immediate consequences for us. Together with Ronald Koeman we have had much success. But we accept Koeman's choice.”

Koeman signed for Ajax on 3 December 2001. His contract was extended in December of 2003 to 1 July 2006. Under Koeman Ajax won the national championship in 2002 and 2004. In 2002 Ajax with Koeman also won the national cup and the Johan Cruijff Shield. Under his guidance, Ajax won the prestigious Amsterdam Tournament in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Koeman also led Ajax to the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League in the 2002-2003 season.

Assistent coaches Ruud Krol and Tonny Bruins Slot will take over for Koeman in the upcoming period. Ajax carefully consider a number of scenarios for the succession of Ronald Koeman.
