Ajax and Babel celebrate special day

Ryan Babel played his 100th match for Ajax on the day his club celebrated its 107th birthday. Both special occasions were highlighted by Ajax's win at PSV (1-5).

Ajax gave themselves the best birthday present possible; an away win at PSV. The club was founded on 18 March 1900 and 18 March 2007 also proved a memorable day for everyone involved with Ajax. With 5,000 Ajax-fans viewing the match on a big screen in the Amsterdam ArenA, rivals PSV were clearly outplayed. Ryan Babel was one of the players who chose this match to shine.

Three years after his debut against ADO Den Haag (February of 2004), the forward came off the pitch a winner against the league leaders. The last time Ajax left Eindhoven with all the points was in the 1994-1995 season. The team of then-coach Louis van Gaal won by 1-4 that magical season. Edgar Davids was one of the goalscorers and one of his teammates back then was Patrick Kluivert. He now plays for PSV. Against Ajax he came on at halftime and scored in the 68th minute, but that was all anyone saw from Kluivert. The Ajax players were the stars on this day.

In Eindhoven, on Ajax's birthday, the result of thirteen years earlier was exceeded. Klaas Jan Huntelaar showed his class by scoring twice. He made the 0-1 by heading in a corner by Wesley Sneijder and made it 1-3, shortly after Kluivert's goal, when he tipped in a cross by Tom de Mul.

Sneijder scored a beautiful goal himself, when he took the ball from PSV's Culina and struck from the far right side with his left foot: 0-2. Gabri made an end to all doubts, if there were any, when he scored with his left a minute after Huntelaar's second goal. Kenneth Perez, a late substitute, made it even worse on PSV by shooting in the 1-5 after 89 minutes.

Babel played a fine match, although he did not score, something he did do in number 99. ,,But this 100th is a reason to celebrate'', said Babel. ,,To be honest, I'm surprised that it has all gone so quickly.’’

Babel obviously enjoyed his team's historical victory. ,,I knew we were going to win when we got the early goal. Thankfully Klaas Jan and Gabri made it 1-3 and 1-4 quickly after Kluivert's goal. We began the match with a good feeling as well.''

Just like last week, Ajax fared well in the league. The difference with PSV is now only five points and Ajax took over second place from AZ, who drew 0-0 against Heracles. With five matches to play, the race for the title is still open.
