Ajax defeated Go Ahead Eagles easily in the 2nd round of the Toto KNVB Cup tournament. In the Johan Cruijff ArenA, the Amsterdam team won Wednesday evening’s game by 3-0 thanks to goals by David Neres, Zakaria Labyad and Klaas Jan Huntelaar. It was a special evening for Vaclav Cerny. After over a year of being out with an injury, he returned to Ajax’s first team.
In the second round cup game, Erik Ten Hag faced his former club: Go Ahead Eagles. The opponent is currently the leader of the Keuken Kampioen Division and defeated the Ajax Reserves this season at the Adelaarshorst: 2-1. Ten Hag elected to shake up his team. Only Daley Blind, Lasse Schöne and Donny van de Beek kept their starting spots.
Ajax kicked off the game with a few minor opportunities. A shot from Labyad into the far corner was saved by keeper Hobie Verhulst. The Johan Cruijff ArenA waited for the first goal, which came in the 35th minute. Labyad reached Neres via a counter. The Brazilian outplayed his opponent and didn’t falter when he came 1 to 1 with the keeper.
Shortly after the opening goal, 2-0 was on the scoreboard. Huntelaar, with his back to the goal, received the ball and reached Labyad with 2 passes in enemy territory. The latter’s shot into the goal was flawless.
Both teams started the second half unchanged. After fifteen minutes, Huntelaar had a great scoring opportunity. A tricky played-back ball wasn’t cleared properly by the Go Ahead keeper and it landed at the feed of the Ajax striker, who failed to score the 3rd goal.
Shortly after, the Hunter did make good. From the right side, Rasmus Kristensen set the ball up perfectly, enabling Huntelaar to score directly: 3-0. The final score was thus reached.
