Matthijs de Ligt joined a distinguished group on Monday. Ajax U17’s 15 year old defender was selected as the best player from the ABN AMRO Future Cup. He thus follows in the footsteps of Abdelhak Nouri, last year’s winner.
“I had hoped, but not expected to win”, was De Ligt’s reaction. The defender was 10 years old when Davy Klaassen won the first golden boot for the best player of the Future Cup. After that followed Anderlecht player Dennis Praet (2011), Ajacied Queensy Menig (2012), Anderlecht player Nabil Jaadi (2013) and Ajax midfielder Nouri last year.
