In the second match during the training camp in Portugal, Ajax did not score a goal in a friendly match. Against 'El Decano' Recreativo Huelva, it was 0-0. Unfortunately, Ronald Koeman could not realise his plan to play his 'best' line-up. Injuries spoiled that idea. Thomas Vermaelen's early exit with an injury was also bad news. The match finished the way it had begun.
Ajax started with John O'Brien as the right back and youngster Thomas Vermaelen next to Johnny Heitinga in the centre of defence. Victor Sikora was the right winger with Tom Soetaers playing the left flank. Those were a few of the things that Koeman could execute according to plan. Wesley Sonck started in the middle of the offence, because Zlatan Ibrahimovic could not play due to a still-sore toe.
Thomas Vermaelen seemed to score from a rebound in the thirteenth minute, but his goal was disallowed. Soon after he was injured when he got a finger in his eye and had to be replaced. ,,This year we have had many injuries compared to the last two training camps'', said coach Koeman. Yakubu, who earlier this week had to miss a few practices himself, replaced Vermaelen.
Recreativo Huelva came on strong occasionally. But Ajax could have taken the lead. Rafael van der Vaart came close but produced a weak effort when he could have crossed to Sonck. Soetaers also came close to scoring.
Koeman brought on his remaining substitutes from the 64th minute. Tom de Mul came on for Rafael van der Vaart, Sikora went off for Mitea and Tomás Galásek left his spot for Nigel de Jong.
Koeman was satisfied afterwards, despite the fact that Ajax failed to score again. ,,We should have won, just like yesterday. We should have scored three times in the first half. But we played good football, we just left too many chances unused. And like yesterday, the first half was better than the second.''
