On Tuesday, Aron Winter signed a two-year contract with Ajax. The 49 year-old former player with the club will lead the Ajax under 19s with Frank Peereboom. Winter came from the KNVB last month and, shortly after his arrival at Ajax, won the Supercup. Ajax starts competition this weekend with an away game against NEC.
Between 2006 and 2009, Winter was active as a coach within Ajax’s academy. During that time, he fulfilled, among other things, the role of reserves coach. The 84-time international has been the coach of the Dutch national under 19s team for the past two years.
“Our job is make sure that the big talents from the Ajax under 19s break through to Ajax 1, preferably in combination with winning prizes”, he said at the end of last month in an interview for this website. “Naturally, I was flattered by Ajax’s interest. This happened at a late stage (August), and at that time, I was in negotiations with the KNVB to extend my contract as the Dutch under 19s coach by two years. I needed to give it some thought, but in the end I really do want to be on the field on a daily basis with a group. The various competitions, such as the UEFA Youth League, regular competition and the under 19s cup, are great challenges with the Ajax under 19s. I want to make my contribution to that. I want to ensure that they players can develop themselves in every area.”
