On Friday afternoon, Erik ten Hag looked ahead to the game at Fortuna Sittard. The coach will be able to call on his captain, Matthijs de Ligt, in Limburg on Saturday.
“Matthijs is fit”, said Ten Hag. “We have one more training, and if he can get through it, he can play. Otherwise, we’re in good shape. Vaclav Cerny is playing with the Ajax Reserves tonight. Dolberg did well in the cup game. He’s taking steps and his form is improving.”
Disappointment for 24 hours, then move on
Of course, the midweek cup win against Te Werve was nice. But it wasn’t a big surprise that Ajax waltzed over the second class team: 0-7. Fortuna – away is the first serious test after the 3-0 loss at PSV. “Sunday just wasn’t good. We started with too much confidence against PSV, and we didn’t react well when we went down. We should have been more resilient.”
'This season, we’ve shown what we can do'
Ten Hag believes that Ajax has learnt from de defeat. “After a defeat like that, you can be disappointed for 24 hours, then you need to move on. I don’t think our confidence has suffered that much. This season, we’ve shown what we can do often enough.”
Stands behind decision
There were many questions regarding the line up against PSV. Ten Hag said that he doesn’t regret his decision for the central defense duo of Blind/De Jong. “I’d do that again. With the people I had available to me, this was the best line-up. I think that the main problem against PSV was that we were mentally sub-par.”
