'Glad that we were Lucky Ajax for once'

Frank de Boer was stoic after a loss of points to FC Utrecht (2-2).  “We didn’t play our best today.  We made too many sloppy mistakes.  I wouldn’t have given that penalty, but I’m happy that we were lucky for once.”

That penalty kick was the most talked-about moment of Sunday’s match. Most people agreed: it wasn’t a penalty.  De Boer didn’t go that far: “I think that 9,5 out of 10 people would not have given that penalty.  It was handed out too easily.  But last week, in the fifth minute, we should have received a penalty when Van der Hoorn was hauled down.  It’s not like we’ve been lucky all season.  But I’m happy that we were Lucky Ajax today.”

Erik ten Hag wouldn’t say anything except that ‘Everyone can see that we should have left the ArenA today with a 1-2 score’.  FC Utrecht’s coach complimented his team.  “We were very well prepared for how Ajax would play.  When they came out with 3-4-3, they converted very well.  We controlled big chunks of the game and when it was 0-2, we thought the game was in the bag.”

De Boer emphasized that Utrecht played an outstanding match.  “I don’t think we played our best today.  That was also due to Utrecht.  We made sloppy mistakes.  The first goal was preceded by a clumsy ball by Klaassen.  And right at the moment when we should have hurt them, the goal was scored on the other side.  But obviously, it starts with us passing to the right colour.  During the break, I told them that we needed to be more opportunistic.  But in the second half, we were even sloppier than in the first.  The fact that we had a chance at 3-2 in the final minute gave us an extra boost.  We are still holding all of the cards.”
