During the press conference, Erik ten Hag announced that Hakim Ziyech had not sufficiently recovered for Sunday’s game against ADO. He is still suffering from a knee injury. Kasper Dolberg (hip) and Lasse Schöne (leg) are not fit, either. “But I’m optimistic that they’ll be available on Sunday.”
Ten Hag expects to meet a combative ADO in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. “In the past, Ajax has either played very well against ADO, or very badly. There is always competitive energy from ADO towards us, and we need to watch out for that. Last season we tied both games, but this is a new season, with some different players on both sides.” Whether ADO’s Abdenasser El Khayati will play is still a question mark. The striker is suffering from a muscle injury. “He’s their most productive player, so if he’s can’t play, it’s definitely to our advantage.”
Veltman taking steps
The coach informed the audience that Joël Veltman is making progress. “Joël is back on the field with the group. We’re phasing him in slowly: right now he’s doing pass and kicking exercises. Our expectation is that he’ll be able to fully train in Florida (in January).”
This weekend, leader PSV will play at Feyenoord. The question is whether the reigning national champion will finally leave points on the table. Ten Hag: “We’re in second place, we want to be in first, so in order to achieve that, the current number one needs to leave points on the table. But I’m not really worrying about it. Our focus is on ADO.”
Ajax - ADO kicks off on Sunday at 12:15.
