Ajax didn’t succeed in beating Feyenoord on Sunday in de Kuip. One and a half weeks after the last-minute loss (1-0) in the cup tournament, the competition version of Feyenoord – Ajax resulted in a point each: 1-1. “I can live with a tie”, said Frank de Boer in retrospect.
The undecided Classic was the last of a series of tough matches for Ajax. Ajax was tested in national, European and cup play. The Amsterdam team had been dealt some blows in the cup tournament and the UEFA Europa League. In the Eredivisie, however, leader Ajax remained on course.
“It was a combative match. In terms of playing, it could have been better. Feyenoord looked like the better team in the first half”, said Frank de Boer after the game in de Kuip’s Fred Blankemeijer press room. “In this phase we had some good opportunities as well, but Feyenoord was more threatening. In the second half, we grabbed our chance and we were very threatening, which resulted in a lucky goal by Davy.” Klaassen helped his team with a shot that changed direction and became the tying goal.
De Boer saw his men pull their chins up after Van Beek’s opening goal. There was no lack of fighting spirit from the Amsterdam team during the entire Classic. “The guys deserves a compliment; we kept fighting”, continued De Boer. “In the end, I can live with the 1-1.”
