De Boer: “An off day in terms of possession”

Frank de Boer didn’t mince his words after Ajax – Fenerbahçe.  The coach was disappointed with Ajax’s performance.  “This was an off day in terms of ball possession”, said De Boer at the press conference.  “We didn’t get into the game for one minute in the match.  In the end, we should count ourselves lucky that the score remained 0-0.”

Ajax didn’t gain much from the draw.  They remain two points behind Fenerbahçe.  “I had definitely envisioned a different game”, said De Boer.  “I can’t say that our guys didn’t put their heart and soul into it, because they did.  But I expect better quality when we are in possession.  The simplest things went wrong, sometimes because of pressure from the opponent, but it also happened when there was no Fenerbahçe player in sight.”

De Boer thinks that it says a lot that Kenny Tete was Man of the Match.  “He deserves it, because he played a good game.  But in fact, you’d much rather see a midfielder or forward being chosen as Man of the Match.  That would at least mean that you’d been threatening.”

De Boer’s closing comments: “We had the opportunity to make an impact.  Unfortunately, it’s no longer in our hands.  If Fenerbahçe wins once and draws, they’re in.  But as long as there is hope, we’re going for it  We need to place our hope on Molde, and we definitely have to win at Celtic.”
