Frank de Boer had reason to be satisfied after winning against Heracles Almelo. Ajax was the dominant team for the whole evening on the artificial turf. The two Amsterdam goals were also things of beauty. Ajax remains in first place. “We didn’t allow Heracles to get into the game at all”, noted De Boer with satisfaction after the game.
“This result pleases us, although we should have scored more goals”, said De Boer during the press conference in Polman Stadium. The Amsterdam team successfully rebuffed any attempt to take over first position. Before the match, Heracles had only trailed the leader by one point. Centre forward Anwar El Ghazi put his team on the winning track after fourteen minutes of play. “Anwar played well. He’s definitely an alternative as centre forward”, were the coach’s complements to the scorer of the opening goal.
Nemanja Gudelj scored the team’s second goal midway through the first half. The two goals turned out to be more than enough for the win. Heracles, after six wins at home, finally lost its first match at home since the renovations on Polman Stadium were finalized. De Boer: “I’m happy with all of the goals.” Ajax made up for its painful loss from two weeks ago against PSV. “That kind of thing eats at you. That loss was an incident.” De Boer praised Joël Veltman for his almost flawless match.
Next top match on Thursday
The Ajacieds won’t have much time to think about this match in a busy football week. On Thursday, the next important match will take place, this time in the UEFA Europa League. In Istanbul, Robin van Persie and his Fenerbahçe team mate await. After two draws, a win will be expected from this Dutch team. Ajax’s performance in Almelo was satisfactory. “If we play with the same spirit on Thursday, we have a chance against Fenerbahçe. We always have a chance.”
After the past interland period, Ajax has made a good start on its next series of matches. “We’ve now had the first of four tough away matches”, said Ajax’s coach. Three days after Fenerbahçe, an away game at Vitesse in on the agenda. The Classic against Feyenoord is also approaching. “We played a very focused game today. Heracles had been in a flow, especially after beating PSV. We wanted to break that flow. To do that, we were able to eliminate Bel Hassani, Bruns and Weghorst. Most of all, we worked very hard. And in the end, we won, deservedly so. We’ve started this next phase very well.”
