Ajax and Matthijs de Ligt have reached an agreement for the extension of his contract that had been valid until June 30, 2018. The new agreement is retroactively effective per October 1, 2016, and is valid until June 30, 2019.
De Ligt was born on August 12, 1999, in Leiderdorp. The defender has played in Ajax’s youth academy since 2008. On September 21, 2016, he made his debut in the first team during the Ajax – Willem II (5-0) KNVB Cup match. To date, de Ligt has played in four official matches for Ajax’s first team, scoring one goal.
Matthijs de Ligt was thrilled with this new step: “To be able to renew my contract after just one year is amazing”, he says. After signing the contract, the seventeen year-old discussed his professional career’s lightning quick start: “It’s been a great year to date. Everything’s going very fast. It’s now going very well, but you need to watch out that you don’t take a dive. We’re working hard to avoid that.”
After a great 2016 with debuts in the Ajax Reserves and Ajax 1, and a goal during his debut, what more is there to wish for in 2017? “It’s been like this for the past few years”, grins de defender. “I’m trying to play as many minutes as I can. Whether it’s with Ajax 1 or the Reserves, I don’t mind. Of course, my goal is to someday play in the ArenA on a weekly basis.”
