A combined Ajax team won a closed friendly match against Achilles ’29 on Thursday. Two goals by Mateo Cassierra brought the score to 2-0 early on, and this was also the final result. Tim Krul kept a clean sheet in his unofficial debut.
Achilles ’29, the last-place team in the Jupiler League, visited the Toekomst sports complex for the second time in two months. On September 12, they were defeated by the Ajax Reserves, 7-1.
The job wasn’t any easier this time. A few players who had played in the first game were also in attendance this time, such as Carel Eiting, Frenkie de Jong and Cassierra, but several players from the A-team were also in attendance. Kenny Tete, Heiko Westermann, Jairo Riedewald, Mitchell Dijks en Riechedly Bazoer rounded out the selection. The match was intended to keep the non-internationals in a good match rhythm.
As far as Cassierra is concerned, even more games against Achilles ’29 would be a good thing. The Colombian player has scored no fewer than four competition goals against the Groesbeek team, and, after just fifteen minutes, had scored two more. In the second minute, he was on the receiving end of a beautiful attack. Riedewald served Pelle Clement with a great cross-pass, and he, in turn, sent Cassierra an unmissable opportunity. Ten minutes later, Cassierra was also on the fortunate receiving end of a pass and he struck once again, 2-0.
Achilles ’29 seemed to wake up at that moment, and realized that they didn’t want to be on the wrong end of a massive score. The Groesbeek team shut it down. Ajax had more difficulty getting through, although another good opportunity came for Dijks, and Westermann, on a corner, sent a header slightly over.
After the break, Achilles ’29 closed the wall completely and there were only a handful of exciting moments. Dijks once again had the chance to score, and it was the biggest one of the second half. After keeper Robbert te Loeke had spoiled his chance in the first half, it was now the crossbar that stopped the goal. A free kick by Frenkie de Jong and a few attempts from the flanks didn’t deliver any more goals.
