Ajax didn’t make it into the Champions League finals. Despite a comfortable 2-0 lead at halftime, Tottenham Hotspur won the return in the Johan Cruijff ArenA, 2-3. With three goals by Lucas Moura, the last one coming in the 96th minute, Ajax’s dream was over.
Ajax was enjoying a comfortable lead when it retreated to the locker room at halftime. Matthijs de Ligt had brought his team into the lead in the 5th minute with a spot-on header, and Hakim Ziyech scored the 2-0 goal with a beautiful shot in the 35th minute.
After the break, Ajax seemed to struggle with conflicting ideas and Tottenham – with nothing left to lose – went for it and scored twice via Lucas Moura. With more than thirty minutes on the clock, the comfortable lead built up over two games had almost been erased.
Flair made way for fighting. Joël Veltman and Daley Sinkgraven were brought in. It was a nail-biting last half hour, during with Tottenham pressed on and Ajax created a few opportunities as well. But by far, the most danger was created by the English tea. Shortly before time, Jan Vertonghen sent a header onto the crossbar and De Ligt rescued the ball from the line after the rebound.
