Ajax has reached an agreement with Heiko Westermann and Real Betis for the defender’s transfer. In Amsterdam, the German player has signed a contract which takes effect immediately and is valid for two seasons, until June 30, 2018.
Westermann was born on August 14, 1983, in Alzenau, Germany. Prior to playing at Real Betis, he played, respectively, for SpVgg Greuther Fürth, Arminia Bielefeld, FC Schalke 04 and Hamburger SV. Westermann made his debut with the German national team on February 6, 2008. He has played in 27 interlands to date, scoring four goals.
Westermann: “I’m very happy with my contract with Ajax. We had a great conversation last week. I knew it immediately: I want to go to Ajax. It’s fantastic that everything has progressed so quickly.”
Trainer Peter Bosz: “Heiko adds something to our selection that we were missing. He has so much experience, he’s played in big competitions, is mentally strong, and can play in each defensive position. He’s two-footed and, if necessary, he can play at midfield. With Mike van der Hoorn’s departure and the arrival of Davinson Sánchez, our defensive picture is complete”, concluded the Ajax coach.
“Ajax is an amazing club with a world famous philosophy”, continues Westermann. “It’s a young team with many big talents. Thanks to many years of Bundesliga experience and my last year in Spain, I can help the young players at Ajax. I can share my experience with them.” He’s clear about his goals: “The all-important qualification matches for the Champions League main tournament start at the end of this month. We need to survive that. And of course, I want to win the championship as well.”
