Ajax lose first friendly match

Ajax has lost its first friendly match.  After a tough first week of training in Zillertal, Austria, they were defeated 4-3 by FC Liefering.  Anwar El Ghazi (2x) and Donny van de Beek scored the goals for Ajax after halftime.

Ajax started without captain Davy Klaassen.  The midfielder had injured his shoulder that morning and was thus unable to participate in the first friendly match under new coach Pieter Bosz.  In the first half, Bosz chose familiar names for his starting eleven.  After halftime he switched out the entire line-up, as he had previously said he would.

Under fire

Ajax was down 2-0 for about twenty minutes.  Prior to that, Riechedly Bazoer had put pressure on the Austrian goal, and Amin Younes saw his beautiful shot miraculously turned away by the Liefering keeper.  After fifteen minutes, Liefering took the lead via Hwang.  The top shooter from the Red Bull Salzburg academy team rounded off a great cross-pass.  Seven minutes later, a stunning goal by Oberlin followed.  The ball disappeared in the upper left corner above Jasper Cillessen.

In the second half, eleven different Ajacieds took to the field.  With Anwar El Ghazi and NickViergever as the veterans, a young Ajax attempted to erase the deficit.  El Ghazi managed to do this himself.  From a free kick, he scored a great goal in the 68th minute, and one minute later, he worked the ball into the goal again, 2-2.

Fifteen minutes before time, the score changed to 3-2 thanks to a hard shot by Grabovac.  But Ajax wasn’t deterred and Donny van de Beek tied the game in the 79th minute.  But the Amsterdam team couldn’t hang on to the 3-3.  In the very last second, FC Liefering won the game thanks to a goal from Berisha.
