On Wednesday, Ajax posted a 3-1 win against Dynamo Kiev in the first UEFA Champions League playoff game. Donny van de Beek, Hakim Ziyech and Dusan Tadic brought Ajax to a victory in a lively Johan Cruijff ArenA, putting Ajax in a good position for the return game in Kiev.
The Amsterdam team’s squad was amended in only one spot after the VVV Venlo competition match. Because of David Neres’ injury, Van de Beek returned to the starting eleven.
After just one minute of play, the Johan Cruijff ArenA burst out in celebration. Van de Beek gave the team an early boost. After a high pass from Ziyech, Tadic was able to send the ball perfectly to Van de Beek, who had come in, and who then proceeded to leave keeper Boyko helpless with a low shot. It wasn’t a hard shot, but it was enough to put he Amsterdam team in the lead.
In this phase, the Ajacieds were mostly found in the opponent’s half. Noussair Mazraoui and Nico Tagliafico, who had come up, were wreaking havoc with the Ukrainian defense. Ajax failed to convert and paid the price for this later on. Andre Onana made a save on Tamas Kadar’s header from a corner, but Tomasz Kedziora’s rebound was too much for him: 1-1.
Comfortable retreat to the lockers
Despite the goal against, Ajax was the better team. Ziyech decided to take a long distance shot, and it worked! This shot ricocheted and landed in the far corner. Right before halftime, the score even increased to 3-1. Tagliafico had come up and had a taylor made pass for Tadic, who sent the ball beautifully into the goal by the first post.
In the second half, Dynamo Kiev was more offensive. Ajax was pushed back to its own half more often. In the 62nd minute, Matthijs de Ligt even had to make a save from the goal line after an attempt by Vitaly Buyalskiy.
Midway through the second half, Ajax regained control of the game, which almost led to a 4th Amsterdam goal. Klaas Jan Huntelaar almost scored his 5th European goal of the young season, but his header scattered on the crossbar.
Just before the end, Ziyech hit more metal when his shot landed on the post. The score thus remained 3-1. A good win all in all, and Ajax will head to Kiev with a 2-goal margin.
