The Ajax Supervisory Board has appointed Rutger Arisz as the Operations Director. He starts on December 1, 2016. The Supervisory Board intends to appoint Arisz as a statutory director in accordance with the applicable procedures and for a period of four years. In the spring of 2017, a Special General Shareholders Meeting will take place in order to formally inform the General Meeting of this intended appointment.
Rutger Arisz (Groningen, February 11, 1970) studied law in Amsterdam and then worked as a lawyer with Houthoff Buruma Advocaten for four years in the area of construction and real estate law. After several years working as a lawyer and manager of Schiphol, Arisz then oversaw the construction and expansion of a terminal at JKF International Airport, for which he relocated with his family to New York. During his studies, he was a successful rower. He took part in the Olympic Games in Barcelona (1992), and won a gold medal in the world championships in 1989, among others. Arisz is also the chairman of the National Dutch Rowing Federation.
On behalf of the Supervisory Board, Chairman Leo van Wijk discusses the appointment: “In October, we announced that we were looking for someone who could focus on a few departments within the Ajax organization which support football. We wanted someone who had specific knowledge and experience with the activities of these departments, and would thus complement the current management team. This person could, if necessary, function as a substitute General Manager. We believe that Mr. Arisz is the right person for this job. After his appointment, the management team will be complete. On behalf of the entire Supervisory Board, I attest that we have complete confidence that, in the daily running of the club, they will ensure that the club continues to grow in the sport, with a financially strong and ambitious organization supporting it.”
Rutger Arisz: “Ajax’s ambition and drive match my character and the way I performed in top sports myself. I hope that my experience in the corporate world can help transform these ambitions into reality. This combination was an important factor for Ajax to enter discussions with me for this role. During the meetings I had, among which, with members of the Supervisory Board and Edwin van der Sar, we appeared to be on the same page in terms of our approach. That inspires confidence for a successful collaboration. I will focus mainly on the internal organization and the activities that make top football possible here. Ajax is a fantastic club, and I am very motivated to get started here.”
General Manage Edwin van der Sar: “I’ve often said that there is much more to it than just showing up to the matches on Sunday afternoon. The big departments which deal with match affairs, as well as, for example, the legal department and the facilities departments which do work at both the Toekomst and the ArenA, will all be under Rutger. Within the management team, a good distribution of the portfolios has been made, which will enable us as a management team to give optimal focus to Ajax. I’m not only talking about the short-term goals, but medium and long-term ones as well. Rutger and I had had a few good discussions recently and I’m looking forward to working with him.”
