Edwin van der Sar opened the condolences registry for Johan Cruijff at the Amsterdam ArenA at 15:00 on Saturday afternoon. The Ajax director was joined by twelve former players from the club. After that, supporters, as well as anyone else who wished to join in were invited to pay their respects to the greatest Ajacied of all time.
A banner with Johan Cruijff’s image was hung by the Noord B entrance of the Amsterdam ArenA on Saturday morning. It was a beautiful photo of Number 14 in red and white. Here, fans and any others who were interested gathered before entering the stadium and sign the condolence registry located next to the main field.
Subdued and warm
Director Van der Sar was the first to sign the condolence registry. A group of prominent Ajacieds followed in order: Marc Overmars, John Heitinga, Piet van der Kuil, Rob Witschge, Simon Tahamata, Henk Groot, Heinz Stuy, Stanley Menzo, Yannis Anastasiou, Ruud Suurendonk, Sjaak Swart en Dick Schoenaker
It was a subdued and warm gathering. The queue was long and everyone had time to admire the iconic photos which adorned the edge of the field before leaving a last message for Johan Cruijff in the condolences registry.
