Ajax back in the title race after dream start
20 February 2012
Ajax set the stage for its 4-1 win against NEC during the first half of the competition match. The Amsterdam win could have been (much) bigger had Ajax been sharper in the second half. Ajax was only impressive for one half, but, as of Sunday, is back in the race for the title.
Tough assignment awaits Ajax in Theatre of Dreams

Ajax can expect a tough return match against Manchester United next Thursday evening, when they will play for a spot in the round of sixteen of the UEFA Europa League. The Mancunians left the ArenA on Thursday with a 0-2 win. Ajax needs to make up their loss in the Theatre of Dreams.

Ajax posts first win of 2012
Ajax posted its first win of 2012 on Saturday evening. In freezing cold Breda, Ajax defeated NAC Breda 0-2. Dmitry Bulykin and Nicolás Lodeiro scored for Ajax after the break. Eyong Enoh retired after half an hour with a hamstring injury. He is thus a question mark for the upcoming match against Manchester United.

Advisory board resigns
Ajax’s Advisory Board has announced that they are prepared to resign. This would take place in the short term, as soon as successors who could rely on overall support can be named. This is a very recent decision by the Advisory Board.

Ajax signs Peter Leeuwenburgh
Ajax has signed youth player Peter Leeuwenburgh. The A1 player was born in Heinenoord on March 23, 1994. The keeper, who has been playing in Ajax’s youth academy since 2004, has signed a contract which runs until June 30, 2015. The contract is effective as of June 1, 2012.

Kramer extends contract with Ajax
Ajax and Chiel Kramer have agreed to extend his contract, which had been valid until June 30, 2012. The new, improved contract runs until June 30, 2013. Kramer was born on January 3, 1992, in Amsterdam. The keeper is part of Jong Ajax’s selection.

Utrecht skins Ajax in the Arena
Ajax didn’t manage to win its first Eredivisie home match of 2012. The Amsterdam team was once again defeated by FC Utrecht. After a 6-4 win for the home team in Utrecht, the Sunday early afternoon match ended at 0-2, thanks to two goals from Edouard Duplan.

Ajax suffers painful loss
Ajax is still looking for its first win of the new year. Away at Feyenoord, Ajax lost 4-2. John Guidetti was the hero in de Kuip. Christian Eriksen and Dmitry Bulykin scored for Ajax.

A-junior Denswil extends contract
Ajax and Stefano Denswil have reached an agreement regarding the extension of his contract, which ran until June 30, 2012. The new, improved contract is retroactively effective, per January 1 2012, and runs June 30, 2015. There is a one-sided option in the contract for Ajax to extend for another season.

Ajax grabs one point in Alkmaar
Ajax partly redeemed itself for Thursday’s cup match loss during the away match against AZ. In a very windy Alkmaar, Ajax won a point on Sunday: 1-1. Fifteen minutes before time, Simon Poulsen placed an attempt by Nicolás Lodeiro into his own goal. Rasmus Elm put AZ in the lead in the first half. The point difference between the teams remains at five points due to the tie.

Historic loss on unique occasion
On Thursday, Ajax posted a historic loss on a unique day. In a stadium filled with kids, Ajax lost to AZ at home for the first time since 1981. The current Eredivisie leader was too strong in the round of sixteen KNVB Cup match, and won 2-3. Siem de Jong scored both goals for Ajax. On Sunday, Ajax will meet AZ again.

Cheering to the sound of K3
The Amsterdam ArenA was filled with almost 23.000 kids and supervisors on Thursday afternoon. It was a unique Ajax – AZ cup match (2-3). Banners with school names, screaming kids and music from Djumbo lent a unique atmosphere to the afternoon. Students from the Hofdijckschool from Oestgeest were among the lucky ones who attended.

‘We need to play like a champion’
Ajax resumes competition with a top match against AZ. In Alkmaar, the reigning national champion can bring the point difference with the current leader down to two points. Nicolás Lodeiro knows what Ajax needs to do in the city of cheese. The Uruguayan was on the bench for the first time in months last Thursday. He’ll need to fight for his spot.
